CSUN Marine Biology students write and illustrate a children’s book about barnacle competition

CSUN Assistant Professor of Biology Nyssa Silbiger assigned her Marine Ecology class to develop a project explaining a classic ecology paper — "The influence of interspecific competition and other factors on the distribution of the barnacle Chthamalus stellatus", published in 1961 by Joseph Connell. They came back with an illustrated children’s book, The Story of the Barnacle Battle, which tells how Chthamalus stellatus is displaced by a competing barnacle, Balanus balanoides, in intertidal habitats — you can hear the whole story, and complete with illustrations, in the video below.
